Vladimir Gelesnoff

(1877-1921)

Count Vladimir Michael Gelesnoff’s mother was from aristocratic British and Italian ancestry. His father, who served in the Imperial Council during the reign of Czar Alexander III, was of Russian nobility. Upon graduating from the University of St. Petersburg he could speak eight languages and read twenty-one. Though his education prepared him to enter diplomatic service, studying languages, history, philosophy, religions of the world and political science, Vladimir’s deeper and greater interest was in the science of chemistry, particularly metallurgical chemistry. He also showed considerable facility in the arts of poetry, music and painting. As a young man Vladimir found a great interest in the study of Scripture, which led him, after graduating from the university, to refuse to subscribe to the tenets of the Greek Orthodox Church, ultimately resulting in his exile from Russia. After continuing his education at the University of Rome, he moved to New York City to pursue his life-long career in the scientific research of electro-chemistry and practical engineering. He also continued his aggressive investigations in the Greek and Hebrew Scriptures, and for years his lectures were in demand in New York and other cities. During these early years he was associated with the Plymouth Brethren, later becoming acquainted with the ministry of Dr. E.W. Bullinger of London, through his magazine Things to Come. It was during this time that he became a dear friend and close associate of Bible teacher Alan Burns, editor of Grace and Glory, a magazine for which he would write. After moving to Minneapolis he was an instructor at Northwestern Bible School. During this time he began, along with A.E. Knoch of California, the periodical Unsearchable Riches. The two would continue their ministry of the Scriptures together until his early death in 1921. The remaining years of his life, scientific career and labors in studying and teaching the Scriptures would be spent in California (San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco). He would spend these last few years patiently battling a series of critical illnesses that would ultimately claim his life at 43.

Studies in Ecclesiastes: The Words and Works of God and Man (#0325) by Vladimir Gelesnoff (1877-1921) Many current versions of the Bible often translate the same Hebrew word in various ways. In this way a veil of mystery has been thrown over many a passage, and a certain amount of human opinion and guesswork has been imported into God’s truth. The Book of Ecclesiastes has severely suffered from inconsistency in translation – no sacred book has ever been so much misunderstood in its whole aim and spirit. Our aim should always be to adjust our thoughts to the facts, and never to adjust the facts to our thoughts. Applying this principle to the matter in hand, our prime concern is to ascertain what the book of Ecclesiastes has to say about itself. The book aims at achieving a threefold object: (1) Recognition of God as God; (2) Reception of His revelation; (3) Regulation of life in view of a future rectification or judgment. ISBN: 978-1-62904-032-5 - 83pp. PB $4.95
Studies in the Gospel of Matthew (#2534) by Vladimir Gelesnoff (1877-1921). In taking up a study of the Gospel of Matthew our prime concern is to divest ourselves of a deep-rooted idea which is apt to preform our ideas and predetermine our conclusions with regard to its teaching. The recognized division between Old and New Testaments is purely arbitrary. It is founded on the fact that the one is written in Hebrew and the other in Greek. However, in seeking light on this point, we must be guided by weightier questions than those of language: stress must rather be laid on such matters as divergence of theme, or change in the Divine attitude and method. Facsimile Paperack. 10
Studies in the Minor Prophets (#2572) by Vladimir Gelesnoff (1877-1921). A dispensational overview of the Minor Prophets. Facsimile Paperback. 138 Pages. $11.95

Gelesnoff was a true pioneer in themes of the Universal Reconciliation, as well as those of the Secret Administration. One of the rare exceptions of “not many wise … not many noble” (I Corinthians 1:26), he was of British and Italian aristocratic, as well as Russian nobility. 54 pages, paperback. $9.95
